I want to share with you a list of museums, which in my personal opinion, natives of Almaty and guests of our city need to visit at least once.

One of the major museums of the city and the country, as well as one of the largest and oldest museums in Central Asia. Stock collection of the museum has about 300 thousand units. Currently, the museum has seven main stationary exhibition halls, diverse collection that allows you to visualize not only paleontological past, but also about the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.

The history of the museum begins with 1935, the current museum building was built in 1976. Currently, the State Art Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after Kasteev is the largest art museum of the country and a leading research and cultural and educational center in the field of fine arts. A rich, varied, priceless collection gives a vivid picture of the artistic culture of Kazakhstan, Europe and Asia, the masters of past eras and the present. Among the main exhibits of the museum fund is more than 23 000 units.

Museum of history of Almaty city was founded in 2002 — is intended to study and demonstrate Almaty history from ancient times to the present. The museum is physically located in different places, such as the museum refers to the archaeological park in the open air «Boraldayskie Saki mounds» — dynastic royal funerary complex, consisting of 47–Sak and Usun mounds in the area of 430 hectares. The museum funds comprise 35 577 items, the occupied area — 440.7 square meters, exhibition area of 189.8 square meters.

Museum of Archaeology of RSE «Gylym Ordasy», being the only museum in the country of this profile, occupies a special place in the Kazakh museology. The museum was opened in 1973 at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh USSR on the initiative of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, D.A. Kunaev.

Many years of research conducted by scientists of Kazakhstan in all regions of the country, allowed to gather a wealth of unique material, perfectly illustrates the ancient and medieval history of Kazakhstan. The most valuable exhibits are available from the world famous Golden Man, reconstruction Berelskoy horse and barrow burial chamber №11 Altai Berel. The museum building also houses Museum of Nature and rare books.

The museum was opened in 1961. Since 2012, it operates paleontological exhibition hall, work has begun on the establishment of a zoological exhibition hall. Paleontological exhibition reflects the diversity and wealth of fauna and geological past of Kazakhstan is represented by skeletons and the remains of extinct animals, collected mainly on the territory of Kazakhstan.

The museum was created by the order of K.I. Satpayev in difficult 1942 at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Kazakh branch of the Academy of Sciences. The museum has a scientific focus and it is the undisputed leader in the number and diversity of geological samples, collected the best examples of ores and minerals from all over Kazakhstan. Remember this museum not only for its original lift, but the room, which is decorated as if you are under the ground. This room simulates horizontal mining, stone walls, clapboard, and even the sound of working machinery used for realism.

National Museum of Folk Instruments, opened in 1980, it is now a museum located in a former officers' houses, built in 1908 by architect A. Zenkov. The museum contains over 1000 exhibits, there collected more than 60 kinds of types and varieties of Kazakh folk musical instruments used by the outstanding singers-improvisers, poets and composers of Kazakhstan.

Military–Historical Museum of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which building includes at a single architectural complex area of the Memorial of Glory in the park to 28-Panfilov Guardsmen, is unique in its kind museum. It contains samples of military equipment, collections, banners, weapons, weapons designs, rewards, and even relics from the fighting places.

Almaty Railway Museum is one of the largest technical museums in Kazakhstan. The history of the museum began in 1999, when on the basis of the personal collection of honorable railway worker and a veteran of the railway transport — Baisen Shormakov small departmental museum was organized. Through the activities of its employees of the museum exposition has expanded rapidly, objects somehow connected with the history of the railroad, sent from all over from Kazakhstan. In 2004, the centenary of the Kazakh railways, the museum moved to a new building of the Almaty office of RSE «Kazakhstan Temir Zholy». Today the museum exposition is placed in several rooms on 2 floors.

National Museum of Book — the only one museum of the book in Central Asia, in the former Soviet Union countries such a museum is only in Moscow and Kiev. The opening the museum of book took place October 20, 1978. The museum is housed in two-story building built in 1936, is a remarkable monument of Soviet architecture of the mid XX century. Museum of Book is a unique museum, which presents more than 60 thousand exhibits, including 5 000 manuscripts and early printed books of different times and peoples. An interesting museum will be for everyone who is not indifferent to literature and writing.

On the basis of decree of the President of Kazakhstan in January 2002 to the 90th anniversary of D. A. Kunaev officially opened the «Museum of D.A. Kunaev». The basis for the creation of the museum was received from the families’ collection of family memorabilia: documents, photos and video materials, portraits, everyday objects. Later they were supplemented by proceeds from friends and supporters of D.A. Kunaev. The special value of the museum lies in the completeness and authenticity of the interior of the memorial apartment.
